How VO2 Works

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a thermochromic material that automatically adjusts its infrared (heat) transmittance based on temperature.

When it’s hot, VO2 reduces solar heat gain, helping to keep buildings cooler. When it’s cooler, it allows more warmth in. This passive, dynamic behavior can reduce heating and cooling loads, improve occupant comfort, and lower energy costs.

At Vorynis, we use a proprietary, low-cost, scalable process to produce high-performance VO2 nanoparticles for use in architectural glass, retrofit films, and laminates.

The Science in Simple Terms

VO2 changes its crystal structure at a specific temperature, switching from a heat-transmitting to a heat-blocking state.

Cooler Temperatures
(more heat in)
Monoclinic PhaseHigher infrared transmittance
Hotter Temperatures
(less heat in)
Rutile PhaseLower infrared transmittance
